The Cummins Memorial Gress-Miles organ provides musical support for a variety of events, including our Sunday morning worship services, Evensong services, and organ recitals with guest organists. We also use the organ to accompany large choral works.

Cummins Memorial

Pipe Organ

The 3-manual, 53 rank organ was installed in 1966 by the Gress-Miles Organ Company of Princeton, NJ. Its 2,852 pipes range in length from 16 feet to less than an inch. Only two of the registers are visible in the façade – some of the Great 8’ Principal and the Positiv 4” Principal pipes. The John Fairbanks Memorial Zymbelstern was added in 1999, and a major renovation was completed during the summer of 2010. The organ is maintained by Rosenberry & Myers Organbuilders.

Cummins Memorial Organ Receives Major Renovation

Thanks to a generous gift from a parishioner, the console of the Cummins Memorial Organ was brought into the 21st Century. The inner electrical components of the organ were original to its 1966 installation. The instrument has provided an invaluable resource to the Christ Church music program for over forty years. However, many of the inner components were long past their prime, and some were beginning to fail.

An especially exciting portion of the renovations was the placement of the organ console on a moveable dolly, with a special ‘umbilical cord’ that will allow the console to become moveable, for better sight-lines between the keyboard, chorus and conductor during a concert on the chancel steps; as well as providing the capability of moving the console into the middle of the crossing for organ recitals. The organ console is now ‘portable’. We will be able to move the console into the middle of the Crossing for Organ Recitals and concerts.

In recognition of the significant contribution to the Christ Church music program made by our late organist Kathleen Pearson, the Pearson Organ Maintenance Fund has been established at Christ Church. Members of the parish, as well as Kay’s family, have contributed to the Fund. If you are interested in making a gift to this Fund, please be in touch with Director of Music Laura Russell, or with the Rector. These gifts will help ensure that the Alexander Griswold Cummins Memorial Organ continues to help lead our community in its praise and worship of God for many years to come.

The renovation includes:
·    Replacement of stop knob and tilt tab units
·    Reconditioning all keys with new contacts and felt bushings

·    Reconditioning the pedal board with new contacts, felts, key          caps

·    Replacement of combination memory system with a new           system having 100 memories

·    Adding two couplers (Swell to Great 16 & Swell to Positive 16)
·    Upgrading the relay & control systems
·    New power supplies in the organ chamber & console
·    New .75 hp blower, with air intake coming from the Nave,
·    Replacement of the old electro-mechanical relay system in the pedal division
·    The old relay systems in the Postiv, Swell and Great divisions will be replaced as additional funds become available
